Landscapes, birds, and even people were subjects of the often famous paintings byartists such as George Caleb Bingham, John J. Audubon, and George Inness. History teacher Ellen Sistrunk, having done a similar project with her world history classes, wanted to integrate both the fascinating history of America with an appreciation of its art and artists through this project.
