Trinity Advances to Final Round!

Eight hundred high school students from across the country arrived to play in the NACA national championship tournament for boys soccer and girls volleyball this week at Fort Camp Bluff in Dayton Tennessee. On Tuesday, 24 soccer teams competed to separate into divisions. Because of Trinity’s season record and the outcome of those games on Tuesday, Trinity ended up in Division 1, competing with the most elite and talented teams in the tournament. Trinity represented as the smallest school at the tournament and the only school with no seniors on the roster.

This afternoon they played a gifted and talented team from North Carolina who had Trinity beat 2-1 until the final 40 seconds of the game when Winston Durbin scored to tie it up 2-2. Trinity’s other goal came from William Patton earlier in the game. As time ran out, the win would be decided by overtime play or penalty kicks for the second time in one day.  The crowd of onlookers grew as well as the tension in the air. With neither team able to score, the outcome would be decided by PKs. In the end, all five of Trinity’s kickers (William Patton, DJ Johnson, Rick Hayley, Sam Schuessler, and Winston Durbin) were able to capitalize on the PKs while Trinity’s goallie Trevvor Vordenbaum was able to block one of the opponents shots, securing the victory for Trinity.

All week long Coach Hayley has been leading Bible studies on David, including the story of David and Goliath. The lessons were certainly appropriate as our boys faced some formidable opponents today. It was also a good lesson on perseverance as TCS played hard all the way to the end.

Tomorrow TCS will play for the National Championship against the team who has won it every year for the past several years, and won tonight’s game by a score of 1-0 in the last 30 seconds of regular play. It should be another great game beginning at 1:45 CST. Please keep our boys in your prayers!
