“Then Peter said to the disciples, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will come with you.” They went out and got into the boat…” John 21:3 (a).
Fly fishing has been a major part of my life for more than 30 years. During that time I have accomplished quite a bit. I was an Orvis Endorsed Guide from 1993-1999 on various tailwater and mountain streams in East Tennessee and was the Fishing Operations Manager at Callaway Gardens Resort from 1999-2008.
I have been featured in TV shows on Turner Broadcasting Network, ESPN Outdoors, Outdoor Life Channel, and Versus.
I have done casting clinics and program presentations for numerous lodges, resorts, and fly shops since 1994 including Camp Jeep 2003, and have spent time fishing with some of fly fishing’s greatest names including Jeff Currier, Gary Borger, Jason Borger, Bob Clouser, Jack Dennis, Dave Hughes, Bruce Richards, Davy Wotton, Shaw Grigsby, Tom Mann, and Gary and Wanda Taylor.
I have been heavily involved in the Federation of Fly Fishers for several years, serving on the Southeastern Council board of directors, serving as the FFF Conclave chair in 2007 and 2008, and presenting casting clinics and program presentations at FFF Conclaves 2000-2008. I became certified as an Federation of Fly Fishers Instructor in 2000 and as an FFF Certified Master Instructor in 2002. In 2002 there were less than 100 masters in the whole world. Now there are about 200. I have received two awards from the FFF; the President’s Award in the FFF Southeastern Council and the Award of Excellence in the national level of the FFF. Although not a competitive tournament caster, I did enter a casting competition at the FFF national conclave in 2007 and won 2nd place in the professional division.
I have also been involved in Trout Unlimited, participating in the Appalachian brook trout restoration project, a project which received national grant money and national recognition from Trout Unlimited, and have been instrumental in forming two fly fishing clubs, one of which was a TU affiliated club.
I have been published in numerous fly fishing, hunting, and travel magazines and am the Southeast regional editor of Fly Fish America Magazine.
In 2007 I was honored that Southern Living Magazine featured an article on me
Besides all that, I tie flies, build fly rods, and have built two driftboats – one wooden and one fiberglass.
All those things have been very important to me – sometimes too important. For several years my identity was pretty much wrapped up in fly fishing, and it was bordering on idolatry. I no longer think of myself as a fly fisherman, I think of myself as someone who fly fishes. It is not who I am but what I do. Fly fishing is after all, recreation; entertainment. Even so, I still enjoy spending time on the water, enjoying the beauty of God’s creation and marveling at the intricacies of it all.
